Benjamin Franklin is one of the towering figures in American History. As one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, Ben Franklin was also a noted author, politician, diplomat, musician, satirist, newspaper editor and postmaster. But he is also famous for his prowess as an inventor and a scientist. His early experiments in electricity paved the way for other great American inventors such as Edison, Marconi, Bell and Tesla. Benjamin Franklin’s legacy of profound curiosity about the world we live in and what makes it work lives on in the Franklin Institute.
The Franklin Institute Science Museum is located in Center City Philadelphia, on Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Established in 1824, the Franklin Institute was founded to honor Benjamin Franklin's genius for invention and science research. Moving into the current building in 1934, the Institute opened its doors as an interactive museum, decades before the term became vogue. Due to the museum’s location on the busy Franklin Parkway, parking space is at a premium, so organize your visit with a rental bus from Bus Rental Philadelphia. Using a rental bus allows you to get off right at the doorstep and with no worries about finding suitable parking.
Inside the museum, you will find lots of exhibits and attractions dealing with scientific principles such as electricity, steam, flight, machines and more. A large part of the Franklin Institute Science Museum is given over to exploring the principles of flight. Enter the Blue Angels Flight Simulator and experience a ride with famous U.S. Navy Blue Angels aerobatic display team. Also on display are exhibits from the Wright Aeronautical Engineering Collection, where the visitor can examine actual drawings, models and calculations made and used by the Wright brothers in their successful quest for controlled, powered flight.
Visit the Train Factory where you become an engineer in charge of putting a 6,000 ton steam locomotive together. Inside Space Command you enter a life size mock up of a space station, and explore the realities and practicalities of space travel. Exhibits show the history of space exploration from the time when humans first looked at the night sky and named the constellations to today’s high tech exploration of space with high powered telescopes.
